Neyem Sarangani Adventure – Malapatan’s Weaving Center

Unknown | Friday, December 24, 2010 | 1comments
As we go south of Sarangani, we visited this small nipa house along the highway where all textiles were made by using this wooden machine and their bare hands and feet. It was really amazing to see these Balungis Women (Balungis is a place in Tuyan, Malapatan) in actual doing this traditional way on making cloth. Nakikita ko lang sila through television documentaries. Malapatan is situated after the town of Alabel, around 45-minute travel from General Santos City.

*Balungis Women doing the Hand Woven Cloth. Snapshots by Ate Leah Valle.

Balungis Women’s Association is a group of women in Balungis, Tuyan, Malapatan where they are active in making and weaving clothes. Karamihan sa gawa nila ay ini-export as far as USA, Japan and Europe. These women are making money though weaving plus they also helping their community to improve its primary necessities. Most of their products are Inaul, Hand Woven Cloth, Malong, Shawl, Leis and other accessories. The good thing about them is they preserved the cultural way on making woven cloth. And this may be passed on their generations through generations.

If you want to see and buy their hand-made works, visit them along National Highway, Balungis, Tuyan, Malapatan, Sarangani Province or you may call their President, Ms. Janaira S. Magangcong through her mobile phone 09061052618 or e-mail her at balungiswomenassociation@yahoo.com

Neyem Sarangani Adventure – Lemlunay Dive Resort

Unknown | Monday, December 20, 2010 | 4comments
Pictures may be evidence of true image of beauty. No doubt.
*Photo Courtesy: IT Teacher Ms. Laiza Limpin

Nainggit ako sa Facebook Photo Albums nila Sir Avel Manansala and our IT Teacher Ms. Laiza Limpin, on their trips to Lemlunay Dive Resort. But where the hell is Lemlunay situated? What is Lemlunay and why beautiful is Lemlunay? Those pictures could be the answer to my questions.

*Promotional Picture of Lemlunay with Ma'am Joana Grace Banting- Lapore

Lemlunay Dive Resort is part of Lemlunay Develpoment Corporation, along Kamanga, Maasim, Sarangani Province. Around one hour drive from General Santos City. Lemlunay also offers cabins at different price range (according to no. of people). Poolside Cabins for 4 persons with free breakfast for 2 costs around Php 3,000 ($70.00), Ocean View Cabins for 2 persons at Php 1,800 ($42.00) and for 4 with free breakfast for 2 at Php 2,500 ($59.00). ($1 = Php 43.00)

If you are planning to have your wedding receptions, meetings, birthday parties and other big special occasions, try their Function Hall, which is open, free with food at Php 300 per person ($7.00 per person) per meal. It’s either plated or buffet. Drinks are also included.

*Lemlunay's Infinity Pool. Photo Courtesy: Ced Zabala, from Hola Zamboanga City

Lemlunay is not all about accommodation; it also offers relaxation to every customer. They have this famous infinity pool, where you can see the view of Sarangani Bay. It’s like, endless sea. Pool entrance fee is around Php 300 per person including food ($7.00 per person). It is really affordable. You can relax whatever you want. And this is their favorite spot.

If you want adventure under the sea, why won’t you try diving and see how beautiful the water of Sarangani Bay is. Trial Dive with gears and dive master costs around Php 1,500 ($35.00). You can see how colorful the corals are.

*On the big left image: Chicken Caciatore with veggies and rice; on the upper right picture: Pookey; on the lower right picture: Steamed Pompano Fish, Photo Courtesy: Ced Zabala, from Hola Zamboanga City

My fave part: eating. Lemlunay has distinct delicacies on their menu. My favorite among the dishes is the Chicken Satay. It is more like chicken steak with creamy butter and peanuts on top. Others include Pookey, whatta controversial name for a dish, it is more like hawaiian kinilaw with special sauce on it and Chicken Caciatore. But unfortunately, I haven’t tried their famous hamburger. Someone recommended that I should try their hamburger because it is one of the best burgers, ever. But don’t worry, may next time pa.

*One, two, three, JUMP. Photo Courtesy: Kuya Arnel Buyco Lim

After the enjoyable experience with Lemlunay, syempre hindi kinalimutan ang picture taking, kung saan binuhos naming ang oras sa kakapicture ng kung ano-ano sa resort. For beginners, nakakalula talaga ang Lemlunay dahil sa ganda. And jumpshot… One two three PICTURE. :)

Neyem Sarangani Adventure – Maitum’s Pride

Unknown | Friday, December 17, 2010 | 3comments
Maitum is a must-visit destination in Sarangani. This place is all about fun and excitement. It gives you a remarkable experience that you’ll never forget in your entire life. Well, this is Maitum.

When I heard this Maitum word, ano ‘to siya, maitim. From the root word “maitim” at tama nga naman ako. Maitum means black, earned its name from black stones of a river where a T’boli (natives) warrior and a village princess vanished while escaping from her enraged father. Thereafter, the stones turned black as they disappeared up to this day.

By the way, Maitum is not just rich in fables, though this small town has lots to offer, especially to local and foreign tourists. The place is considered as Mindanao’s Old World. You can find remarkably unique archaeological assemblage unparalleled in Southeast Asia. Aba, ang taray ng Lola mo! Hundreds of anthropomorphic jars were used as covers for burial jars associated to the Metal Age in the Philippines circa 5 B.C. to A.D. 225. Well, too much for history but this only means that maybe some of our first ancestors live in caves of Maitum and those artifacts found in that place are just the evidence that they are making jars to use for burials of their relatives. This diorama can be seen in Maitum Municipal Hall and in National Museum, Manila. I can remember that these artifacts were featured in National Geographic Channel and dubbed as the Anthropomorphic Pottery in Maitum.

I think we are done dealing with history. Now it’s time for my fave part of this article. Adventure!

If you want to visit Maitum, you need to visit Gen San first! Around 127 kilometers away, two and a half hours travel from Gen San. But don’t worry. Sarangani Province, so far, and as far as my concern, has the neatest or should I say smoothest roads in the Philippines. Maybe followed by going to Tagaytay or Subic but this one is definitely smooth. Less prone to vehicular accidents plus great views, ganyan ang Sarangani!

*Photos by Sir Arnel Joshua Lim

Once you arrived in Maitum, don’t forget to take a challenge at Pangi River, 1.6 kilometer tube ride in New La Union, Maitum. Ngayon ko lang na realize that I was about 1.6 kilometers of water tubing splashing and tumbling experience! Pangi River was ranked 3rd as the cleanest river in the Philippines last 2003. No ebola, no ecoli or salmonella, or even a single ebak on that river. Ang lakas ng flow ng tubig sa river! It was really a challenge for me to take that tube ride. Because of my blogger colleagues are ever supportive, natauhan akong sumali sa kanila. Then I asked Ate Leah to borrow some pants over a small house nearby the river (kasi ayokong mabasa ang shorts ko) and took that 100 million peso challenge. And my time has come. Well, it’s up to you Lord, whatever happens. But oh c’mon, chicken little. The’was totally fun! I can’t explain the happiness and thrill. Para akong si Manny Pacquiao (picture cited) o ala Marc Nelson ng Sports Unlimited. I promised to myself to come back in that place in 2011. I don’t want to elaborate it further though I let you try this water tubing challenge. It was really fun! Aside from water tubing experience, you can also enjoy day-trekking or horseback riding and commune with nature along the way. The village offers overnight cottages and tents.

Kung nagugutom naman kayo, visit Cresing’s Food Products in Purok Namnama, Maitum. When we had this Neyem Saranggani Adventure last December 12, pinasurprise kami nang todong todo. Pinakain kami ng maraming pagkain. Whatta jam-packed breakfast! I ever love the Bangsi, Maitum’s Pride. If you are wondering what is bangsi, it is a half-dried flying fish or “marinated bangsi”, very dominant in the waters of Sarangani. And now, one of Maitum’s Pride. Kung ang Gen San may Tuna Festival, sa Maitum naman, may Bangsi Festival. Every last week of January, this celebration honors the fisherfolks who capture flying fish or bangsi for livelihood. Ang hirap kaya maging mangingisda at hulihin ang mga nagsisiliparang mga isda sa dagat. It’s like you’re capturing grasshoppers in the field. Maitum also celebrates the feast of Sto. Nino every January.

*Photos by Sir Arnel Joshua Lim

Kulang ang breakfast kung walang kape para sa mga Pinoy, Coffee in English. But this coffee is very strange. Rice is never out the picture when we talk of Maitum. It continues to be one of the top rice-producing municipalities in the province. It is the origin of Cresing’s Organic Rice Coffee which is now becoming a popular alternative beverage. The good thing about this coffee is that there is no caffeine, no preservatives added, unlike the commercial coffees in the market today, but take note of this: it relieves gas pain, good for the taste buds and soul. But all of these descriptions were true. Unfortunately, I joined this tour suffering from stomachache. Good thing I tried their Rice Coffee. Maybe because of its aroma and probably laughter (dahil kay Ate Leah), dahan-dahang nawala ang sakit ng aking tiyan. They are also selling a bottle of Rice and Corn Coffee. If you have enough money, then you need to buy it. You can also try their local products such as bagoong, tinagtag (rice crisps), and bangsi, my favorite.

Maitum has lots to offer but unfortunately, we had only limited time to explore other sites such as Bat Sanctuary in Pinol and Ticulab, Pawikan Sanctuary in coastal barangay of Old poblacion, Twin Falls of Bati-an and Maitum Jars in Pinol Cave. But these experience brought to us to the new Sarangani, which we can proudly showcase it to the world how Maitum, in specific, and Sarangani, in general, as the one stop tourism destination of the south.

An Enchanted Resort named Amandari Cove

Unknown | Saturday, August 14, 2010 | 12comments

Kahit umuulan sa labas, well I’m sure na mapapa-“oh la la” ka sa place na ‘to, that you’ll definitely love to stay and spend some quality time with your barkadas and families for a reasonable price!
Amandari Cove gets a makeover from the people who brought Café Amoree, this time bringing us a complete hotel resort with full dining, wining and entertainment experience. (Condensed from Armando Nicolas P J’s Gensan Gazer Magazine)

Main Facade of Amandari Cove
Amandari, from Balinese word means Peaceful Spirit, is the former Dacera Farm Resort and now owned by entrepreneur couple Ricky and Tess Almanzor. Mas lalo nilang pinaganda ang dating Dacera and renamed it as Amandari Cove: An Enchanted Resort within the city.
I think my last visit in that resort (Dacera Farm Resort) is when I was in First Year High School (5 years ago), the place was cool, environment-friendly ang lugar except for not-so-good facilities like the pool, comfort rooms plus their cottages.

And after 5 years, nakapasok na ulit ako sa Dacera. But it’s not Dacera anymore. Everything has changed a lot, from the entrance to the reception area, and then the pool got renovated, plus cool and relaxing cottages with additional hostels ready for occupancy, anytime.
The first thing that I noticed in the resort is their Bali-type Entrance building, leading to two stairs. Upstairs for the two Conference Halls and downstairs is for the Information Area (just like in hotel), Coffee Shop and Restaurant and to the resort itself. Now it looks more elegant and comfy, ideal for travelers and other special occasions.
There are two swimming pools in the resort: the Olympic-sized pool, which was renovated and now turned into commodious one, and the usual swimming pool, which was also renovated and expanded its size to make it bigger. This will make Amandari Cove as the venue of swimming events and competitions and more likely, will be a venue for beauty pageants and bikini opens in the region as well. For only 50 pesos for adults and 30 pesos for children, you can enjoy the relaxing coolness of the waters of Amandari.

Top to bottom: Lagoon and Swimming Pools
If you’re a nature lover, like me, well you’ll definitely love this kind of trip that Amandari Cove has to offer. You don’t need to go and travel as far as Lake Sebu just to enjoy boating and fishing at the same time! In fact, the resort has its own enchanted lagoon, situated at the back of the resort. You can go boat sailing by pairs or with your loved ones for 100 pesos per hour or enjoy the taste of Amandari at their Café located just beside the lagoon. Pahabol: Absolutely FREE WIFI! Yes! Free WIFI ang Amandari Cove! Now, you can enjoy browsing your favorite websites in the internet using your WiFi-enabled devices inside the resort. Pwedeng-pwede mo nang i-publish ang iyong bikini photos and your happiest moments with Amandari Cove. :)
"Free WiFi Connection, Conference Halls, Caico's Restobar and other amenities of Amandaro Cove"

It is really an enchanted place to relax within the city! If you want to experience Amandari, just visit Amandari Cove, Old Dacera Farm Resort, off Mabuhay Road, turn left between Choices Convenience Store and Petron Gas Station. (See the Map for details) It is open from 6am to 12 midnight. They are also accepting special occasions. For more details, call (083)554.2654, (083)826.1074, (083)826.1070.

Click the map for larger view. :)

PS: This will be the OFFICIAL VENUE for MSU-JITS' Acquaintance Party on August 21, 2010. Thanks to Amandari Cove for the venue, plus the food! Spread the word, TECHIES! :)

Robinsons Place Gensan: Mas Maganda Dito!

Unknown | Tuesday, August 10, 2010 | 3comments
Naitanong ko na 'yan sa sarili ko, pero I couldn't find the answer, until a big commercial complex entered, constructed and finally served hundreds of thousands of Generals and maybe millions of tourist around the country in GenSan. Ano 'yun? Halika't tuklasan natin.

I'm an avid reader of Skyscrapercity.com, it's a forum site dedicated to all city lovers, o 'yung minamahal nila mismo ang kanilang hometown, get updated with what's new in their compound. I found out that magpapatayo ng mall ang Robinsons Land Corporation. At ito ang natuklasan ko:

RLC or Robinsons Land Corporation is one of the country's largest premiere real estate players. RLC's growing portfolio covers various operations like shopping centers, high-rise condominiums, housing and land with residential subdivisions, office buildings and hotels in over 7,107 sprawling islands of the country.

GenSan, as the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, welcomed RLC to invest and put up a full-service mall that serves nearly 600,000 Generals and other neighboring towns in SOCSKSARGEN. Akala ko rumors lang 'yun. But they transformed it into a FACT.

After a year and a half of construction, tinawag itong ROBINSONS PLACE GENSAN, a full-service mall that only provides a world shopping experience. It opened last September 30, 2009. With over a hundred of local and national food and retail players opened its door to serve eager mall goers coming from local areas within SOCSKSARGEN and as far as Davao and Cotabato Region. (See my Grand Opening Blog Post)

Robinsons Place Gensan: Now Open!

Unknown | Sunday, October 18, 2009 | 14comments
I thought it was only a rumor but finally, the so-called rumor transformed into a FACT!

"Robinsons Place Gensan's main entrance during the soft opening. Photo Courtesy of Gensantos.com (Sir Avel Manansala)"

The much-awaited mall has just landed here in highly-urbanized city and 13th fastest-growing city in the country. Robinsons Place Gensan in the newest mall attraction to all shopaholics. It comprises 7 junior tenants like Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket, Robinsons Movieworld, Handyman Do-it Best Hardware, Quantum Amusement, Robinsons Appliance and Robinsons Foodcourt. Some of the tenants occupying the mall are from local and national brands like Jollibee, Aling Lucing Sisig, Rai Rai Ken, Dunkin Donuts, the Sun Shop, National Bookstore, and many more. This mall is the newest tourist attraction due to its exterior and interior designs of the mall. It also houses some of the famous local and national food chains and restaurants in the Al Fresco Dining Strip located at the side of the entrance of the mall and it will make the nightlife of the city alive because it will be opened until midnight.

"Images of Robinsons Place Gensan a day before the Soft Opening. Photo Courtesy of masterboy of Skyscrapercity (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/member.php?u=474594)"

On their soft opening on September 30, many people went to the mall to see the features of it and i was present during the soft opening. First, I noticed the spacious Activity Area of the mall and it feels like you’re entering in a big international airport. It comprises only a floor, there’s no 2nd floor or 3rd floor. I saw some of the famous brands occupying the mall and I noticed that the department store is just like in department store in Ermita. Also, they have organized supermarket and also just like in Robinsons Manila. The Movieworld of the mall also looks like you’re in the red carpet premiere of your own movie. [**naks naman. **]

"During the Grand Opening of the Mall, RLC Pres Frederick Go, Robina Gokongwei-Pe, Mayor Acharon, Dawn Zulueta-Lagdameo,Jinkee Pacquiao, Representative Darlene Custodio, Dionisia Pacquiao, JG Summit Pres Lance Gokongwei, Commercial Center Division Pres Cornelio Mapa, and host Donita Rose raise and drink their toasts for Robinsons while balloons fall down from the ceiling. Photo Courtesy of Gensantos.com (Sir Avel Manansala)"
Having Robinsons Place Gensan in the city is the sign of being a progressive and prosperous economy that we experienced right now. So far, there are 2 present malls in the city, the Gaisano and KCC Malls. Recently, KCC extended their mall and they opened their new North Wing. The North Wing occupies some of the famous boutiques like Folded and Hung, Crocs, Plains and Prints and soon-to-open Solo, Kashieca, Freeway and Fagioli. Also, the mall is preparing for the opening of its South Wing this year.
Due to the city’s big economy and being a populous city, the SM Prime expresses their thoughts to put a mall in the city and expected to begin their construction in December this year and expected to open on 2011 together with the SM North Lanang in Davao City.
