BlogFest 2.0: Effecting Progress and Change through Blogs and Social Media

Unknown | Sunday, November 27, 2011 | 0 comments
The next speaker really changed the real idea of what is social media in the eyes of a blogger. Opinion makers should have an idea on how to mixed up great thoughts in words or comments since we are free to express ourselves not to harm others. People engaged with social media have also the freedom to learn and to think out of the box and has the capacity to change the current situation of an object. Those are just some highlights that Manuel "Manolo" Quezon III discussed during the Blogfest SOCCSKSARGEN 2.0 with a theme, "The Emergence of Blogs and Social Media".

Social media changes the trend of what is now, compared to the past, wherein there is no Facebook or Twitter to get mingle with people, Youtube to watch missed fave shows in full color or high definition, or even reading news articles via Yahoo!, CNN, GMANews.tv and such rather than reading it in very versatile paper. Because of technology, everything is made to substitute the old practice.

According to the research presented by Quezon, Filipinos are engaged with the use of computers instead of listening to the radio for news and information, crying in front of the TV while watching telenovelas, or even reading comic books and newspapers to kill information. Because computer and internet are somewhat, addictive, we should set up new rules on how to handle our thumbs.

In politics, Social Media has a big role in promoting themselves, I mean promoting their platforms, well it is only for election time purposes, perhaps. Before, politicians spent a lot of mickey mouse money to print out their lame posters and flyers as if people notice it. But now, because of the social media era, politicians are now invading social networking sites to touch people, to have their www[dot]com websites to share their political diaries and projects. It really influences people, says the internet.

EVERYONE USES FACEBOOK. Filipinos has the world's highest Facebook penetration. It means that we tend to open the internet and directly login to our Facebook accounts. Indeed, it's true. Facebook is not for laptops and desktop computers. We can access to Facebook by using smartphones, tablets, or even SMS. That's how powerful social networking is.

FILIPINOS LOVE TO SHARE PICTURES AND VIDEOS. Don't deny it, alright. We love Project 365 or even the next Youtube Sensation. Those are some filipino traits that are widely seen online.

FILIPINOS PREFER TO READ OTHER PEOPLE'S BLOGS THAN TO WRITE THEIR OWN. Yea. Applicable to some bloggers. Even myself fond of reading other people's blogs, just to find inspiration for my new blogpost or to gain idea.
Teens are watching less TV, listening to less radio, reading less books and magazines, doing less sports, less interaction with friends, face-to-face frequently, and spending less money or traditional consumer items. Thanks to virtual connectivity technology like text messaging and the internet. - McCann, 2007

BlogFest 2.0: History of the Internet in Mindanao

Unknown | Sunday, November 27, 2011 | 0 comments
What do you think of the real situation in Mindanao during 90's? What if there's no source of news and information about Mindanao until now? What if, Mindanao has no Bob Martin? What do you think?

This guy, Bob "MindanaoBob" Martin, is actually famous for promoting the Philippines not to his fellowmen in United States but also in the world by his top emerging blogs and websites. He was one of the keynote speakers of this year's BlogFest SOCCSKSARGEN 2.0 with a theme, "The Emergence of Blogs and Social Media".

Martin shared his life before he engaged in blogging especially promoting Mindanao to the world. It was in 1990's when internet was introduced to them. He has no idea about the internet, communicating with other people with the use of e-mail (he said that it took 30 minutes to send an ordinary e-mail to someone, it was as slowest as the dsl line) until he found out that he could do something better with it. He was responsible for posting insights about Mindanao, particularly in General Santos City (2nd for having a website in Mindanao that time, Davao being the 1st) promoting the island on how beautiful, wonderful and lovely the people are. He was also responsible for creating the first website for Mindanao, www.MINDANAO.com

He always come to Mindanao until his family decided to live in General Santos in 2000. After several months, he established his own internet cafe business (one in RD Plaza and second in East Asia Royale Hotel) using a satellite to have a high speed internet connection (well, not that really fast compared to this generation). Until his family decided to move in Davao because of terrorism activities happening in General Santos but it was not a hindrance for him to stop blogging about Mindanao. It was a challenge for him that Mindanao, as an island, is really safe to travel.

Since 1990's, Martin already visited 24 out of 26 provinces in Mindanao, including some of the dangerous places such as Lanao Provinces, Tawi-tawi, Sulu, and ARMM Provinces. Well, it was really dangerous to travel in those places especially if you're a foreigner but Martin find it not that scary or dangerous, at all.

Because blogging is now trending in this generation, Martin encourages young and professional bloggers to keep on blogging positive vibes about Mindanao, interesting facts, foods in order to promote the tourism of the place, and to replace the bad news with these stuffs. Martin started nothing but when he explored Mindanao, everything's changed. He put it on the web, people read his posts, and he influenced people to come to Mindanao to invest, to relax or perhaps, to live. A good example is the www.GENSANTOS.com by Mr. Avel Manansala, where he keeps on promoting General Santos to the world and now, one of the emerging and influential bloggers in the country.

The second version of BlogFest SOCCSKSARGEN was made possible by Fat and Fab Brothers of the Philippines, Mr. Avel (www.gensantos.com) and Orman (www.gandaeversomuch.com) Manansala in cooperation with SOCCSKSARGEN Bloggers. 1st FlipRap Battle sa Kalilangan 2011

Unknown | Sunday, January 23, 2011 | 3comments
I was so amazed when I saw the episode of Kapuso Mo Jessica Sojo last year regarding the FlipRap. Actually, FlipRap or Flip Top Rap is a new form of rap, mostly the battle of wits, the content and the execution must capture the attention of the audience. The rappers have different personalities and styles, in this sport the rapper must certainly maintain a cool head. He must be able to take in his opponents words with a cool head and somehow come up with an answer in the form of rap. To be able to do so, your neurons will probably have to fire faster that your tongue. Rapping what your thinking and putting a rhyme, a beat or jive in it sounds extremely difficult to do.

But enough with the technicals. The main point here is to promote another culture to those FlipRap enthusiasts in General Santos since FlipRap is on trending just like twitter. :)

FlipRap Battle sa Kalilangan 2011 will be the first-ever FlipRap Competition in the city, as part of the 2011 Kalilangan Festival. It is open to all FlipRap enthusiasts, high school and college students (15-20 years old) of General Santos City. If you're interested to join the FlipRap Competition, click here to download the Application Form. Don't forget the basic requirements needed to join the competition: must have a 2x2 picture, Birth Certificate, Valid School ID, Certification from School Principal and Fully Accomplished Application Form

Here are the Guideliness for the competition:
  • The competition is open to all high school and college students (15-20 years old) of General Santos City.
  • Each team is composed of two members.
  • Two (2) teams will promote themselves or their school through RAP.
  • Each team is free to say anything except explicit curse words. Cursing is subject for disqualification.
  • The statements should have rhyming words in their endings. Statements should be in Filipino or Bisaya.
  • Before the teams will battle, they are given 1 minute and 30 seconds to present their original RAP song. Participants must provide their own beat/rap music.
  • There are three (3) rounds in each match. Each team is given 1 minute to say everything they can. Once the team’s time is up, it is opponents turn to present.
  • After the three (3) rounds, the judges will state their opinions and vote for the winner.
  • The team with the most number of votes wins the battle.
  • An elimination screening will be conducted to choose the 8 teams who will qualify for the finals.
The champion of the said competition will be receiving Php 5,000.00. For 1st, and 2nd Runner Ups will be receiving Php 3,000.00 and Php 2,000.00 respectively. And Consolation Prizes to those non-winners will be also receiving Php 1,000.00. Eliminations will be at Robinsons Place Gen San Activity Center on February 12, 2011 at 2pm and the Finals will be on February 22, 2011 @ Oval Plaza Grounds, 7pm.

Talk@MachoMucho Premiere

Unknown | Wednesday, December 15, 2010 | 1comments
And now, start talking.

Talk@MachoMucho last November 17 was a blast! It was their first premiere activity, organized by The Boss of MachoMucho, Mr. Ralph Layco.

The first discussion was all about the passion of being a photographer by one of Cebu’s Professional Photographers Mr. Jim Ubalde with Gen San’s very own James Michael Montaño, Joppet Tan, Paul Llanos and Michael Chan.

Maganda ang naisip nilang event because we can talk and talk, getting to know one another by sharing whatever they want, under the sun, plus it will gain self esteem on your part. This also promotes additional learning to all enthusiasts (including Rabsky) about the topic which is the passion of being a photographer.

Because of this, I saw Mr. Jim Ubalde's Multiply Account, where he published all of his photographic works. Mostly on Wedding Photography. And this is what I like on his album:

Isn't that cute?! Just visit his Multiply Account for more amazing photos.

By the way, back to the topic. I was the only SOX Blogger present in that event so I shared my experiences and life as a blogger. It is really difficult for me to be a blogger plus a struggling student who travels around 30 kilometers everyday then 30 kilometers again to go home. I also shared to the listeners on how I blog when I'm on a rush. Definitely, sinabi ko na nagbo-blog ako while riding on a trike or in a jeepney just to post a blog. It's like you're making a project online with deadline of submission. But I find this thing really fun. :)

Because I shared a lot, may FREE PIZZA ako courtesy of Little Kitchen Restaurant. (Photos by Sir Orman Manansala, Eat's Terrific!)

Watch out for another Talk@MachoMucho event every third Wednesday of the month. Plus don't forget to try MachoMucho's Joe Black Coffee and their services. Get a new haircut dude. It's a WiFi Free Access in here. :)

For more info, visit Macho Mucho at 2nd Floor, Sun City Arcade, General Santos City or call 554-(BOSS) 2677. Visit their Facebook account: http://www.facebook.com/machomucho

Reminiscing CAMACOP Summer Camp 2010

Unknown | Saturday, November 06, 2010 | 6comments
Step up! Take the Lead! Passion for God, Compassion for People.

This is like, super delayed post. CAMACOP stands for Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches of the Philippines. Yes, Alliance Churches of the Philippines. Marami ngang nagtataka kung bakit sumasali ako sa kanilang activities like TGIF (Thank God It's Friday, every Friday of the week) sa City Alliance Church na kahit I'm a pure Roman Catholic

The story behind it was someone hypnotized me (hahaha just kidding) but actually convinced me to join in their weekend get-together with Alliance people, every Friday night sa City Alliance Church. Medyo malapit-lapit nga siya sa bahay namin kaya I grabbed the opportunity to join. Every Fridays, present ako at parating late! (but not now due to my busy sched and other important matters) and sa tuwing natatapos ang activity, may mapupulot kang aral from the Pastor and from yourself, realizing things na ginawa mo from the past na masama and mabuti, to pray and ask for guidance, to repent your sins. The good thing about this activity is that most likely, the best way to release your anger, stress and negative vibes.

Because of this, napa-yes, yes ako for the CAMACOP Summer Camp 2010: Step Up! Take the Lead, Camp Mariano, Koronadal City last May 13-15, 2010. Kaso wala akong pangregistration. And that was the time na andami ko pa palang tapusing works. But thank God He found a way para makapunta ako. Though that was the last night of the activity, May 14. Andaming campers all the way from Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, and as far as Saranggani Province in the South. The speaker of the said event was no other than Rev. Augie dela Cruz.

After the fun and frolic activity, nagsimula na ang walang tulugang program with some City Alliance friends. We played many games, even the truth or dare na pakainin ka pa ng baby powder at ubusin ang isang pakete ng 3-in-1 coffee. Through this camp, andami kong nakilala at natutunan from them. (and the rest are history)

And oh, I can't wait for the Year-end Camp this December!

Gensan's Tuna Festival Experience 2010: TM Astig Fest's Parokya Ni Edgar

Unknown | Sunday, October 03, 2010 | 1comments
Well I had this opportunity to watch Parokya ni Edgar Live at TM Astig Fest Concert during the final night of Gensan's Tuna Festival Experience 2010, at the Oval Plaza field around 23 o'clock with SOX and Davao Bloggers. Thanks to Sir Avel Manansala of Gensantos.com and Sir Paul Fernandez of Globe Telecom GenSan for the free access to the concert. :)

These photos by Sir Kyawster and Brian Dan Congson only tells that PnE had fun invading the Tuna Capital. Kahit din kami, nasiyahan at nakita namin sila ng malapitan!

Nagulat ako sa dami ng taong nanood ng TM Astig Fest! It was a big hit actually. Mas sulit nga talaga basta nakapanood ka ng concert dahil they actually sung atleast 14 of their hit songs, namely my faves The Yes Yes Show, Picha Pie, The Ordertaker and Buloy. :))

At nang natapos ang concert, I had a chance to see them so clooooosee at the backstage. They're so WHITE! (Lintek, ganyan ba talaga basta sikat? Mapuputi? Haha) Nang dahil sa kanila, na-late ako sa major class ko. Haha. Though it was worth it. The best. They ROCK my WORLD, PnE! :)

Gensan's Tuna Festival Experience 2010: Mardi Gras Competition

Unknown | Wednesday, September 29, 2010 | 10comments
Mardi Gras Street Dancing Competition is one of the most-awaited portions of the Tuna Festival Experience 2010. Mas lalong pinakulay ng different contingents from Elementary and High School ang daanan ng Pioneer Avenue as they danced with the beat of Centerpoint's Whoa Gensan! :)

Pagkatapos ng electrifying dance moves by the contingents, they showcased their 7-minute streetdance showdown at the Lagao Gymnasium, the Mindanao's biggest indoor gymnasium. Doon nagpasiklaban ng galing ang mga kalahok sa Mardi Gras. Well, special thanks to Gensantos.com for providing the livestream of the said event. Because of this, ang mga hindi makapunta sa Lagao Gym ay nakinuod nalang sa kani-kanilang desktop computers and laptops. And so proud to be a member of the Web team! Headed by Sir Avel Manansala with Kuya Alexis Chua, Sir Lyle Santos, Kuya Marz Bendol, and among others. :)

The Mardi Gras Competition at Lagao Gym ended successfully. This event was made possible by the Local Government Unit of Gensan, major and minor sponsors of this year's Tuna Festival Experience and to the organizers, as well as the people of Gensan. To Sir Orman Manansala, congratulations for a job well done! :)
